“Growing up, my dad had a pair of sneakers in the garage that he’d wear when he mowed the lawn. He called them his ‘knockaround’ sneakers—you could count on them, they were dependable, and you didn’t care if they got beaten up.
So, I just applied that idea to sunglasses. I wanted them to be affordable, if you lost them or broke them, no big deal. The Knockaround name seemed like a natural fit—like, I’m just going to knock around this pair of sunglasses.”

Knockaround was founded in 2005 by Ace during his time as a graduate art student at the University of California, San Diego.
Merging the classic East Coast prep style of his Virginia upbringing, his interest in design and fashion, and a newfound love for the perpetually sunny, laid-back lifestyle of Southern California, Ace created a company centered around a sunglasses line that was both practical and stylish.
THAT WON’T BREAK THE BANK
The ensuing years have brought lots of exciting developments and growth, and this basic sunglasses line has expanded to include multiple frame styles, a wide variety of color options, apparel, headwear, and other accessories, such as belts, duffel bags, and uniquely branded goods.

Ten years and counting
Over the years, Knockaround has worked with a wide variety of artists, brands, and companies—from Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, to POW! WOW!, to the San Diego Padres, to Benny Gold, to Green Flash Brewing Company, to Pepsi, to a bunch of local elementary school kids! These collaborations make for great product concepts and designs. The constant exchange of new ideas with other creatives help ensure that every day, Knockaround is flying high.
Knockaround has been featured in a number of well-known media outlets, such as GQ , Hypebeast, US Weekly, Cosmopolitan, Complex Magazine, and The Today Show.
Every day more and more people are seen sporting a pair of classically-styled, affordable Knockaround sunglasses—even celebrities like Snoop Dogg, Natalie Portman, Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Alba, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashton Kutcher!
What began as a tiny operation in Ace’s art studio has since outgrown two warehouse spaces, and is going strong at its new headquarters in downtown San Diego, just a short walk from the ballpark.
