We are plastic neutral

WHEN WE USE A POUND,
WE REMOVE A POUND
That’s right—for every pound of plastic we use in production, we remove a pound of ocean-bound plastic from the environment elsewhere! To coordinate this massive collection goal, we work with an organization called CleanHub to facilitate partnerships with waste management groups and environmental organizations all over the world. CleanHub audits the collection amounts to ensure our status as Plastic Neutral is accurate and verified.
Achieving plastic neutrality has been a goal of ours for a long time. In 2022, by collecting 36,000 lbs of ocean-bound plastic, we finally got there. But that’s just the start. In 2023, we’re aiming to collect 45,000 lbs of ocean-bound plastic. That’s the equivalent of about 2,160,432 plastic water bottles, or 2,704,950 plastic bags, or 18,033,000 plastic straws. In other words: we find a lot of stuff that we definitely don’t want in the ocean, and we keep it out of the ocean.

THE PROCESS EXPLAINED
We are officially Plastic Neutral. Here's how we make it happen.

2023 GOAL: COLLECT AND RECOVER 45,000 LBS OF PLASTIC WASTE
Knockaround calculates the amount of plastic used in our production over the course of the year. That same amount is set as a goal to collect, recover, and recycle (when possible) plastic waste elsewhere in the environment.

IDENTIFY AND ENGAGE COLLECTION PARTNERS AROUND THE GLOBE
Working with organizations primarily in India and Southeast Asia, Knockaround gets boots on the ground to collect and intercept waste before it reaches waterways and, ultimately, the ocean. Our partner, CleanHub, acts as the main point of contact between Knockaround and the dozens of local organizations we work with.
Plastic waste is collected during regularly organized environmental clean-ups and is also pulled daily from fishermen’s bycatch. In some communities, plastic waste is collected directly from households. For many people, these waste management systems are the first they have experienced and provide an alternative to open dumping and burning of plastic waste. These events also model a sustainable and replicable cleanup process throughout the surrounding coastal regions, and create stable and dignified jobs for local communities.

ONGOING COLLECTION AND SORTING
After the plastic waste has been collected, it is sorted into different categories so each material can be disposed of in the best possible way. Recyclable plastic is sold to local recyclers and non-recyclable plastic is processed in the most environmentally sustainable way available. The amount of plastic collected is tracked and verified by our partner, CleanHub, and progress towards our goal is updated on a regular basis.

RECOVERY UPDATE
As Knockaround continues to grow, so do our collection goals and efforts. Every Knockaround purchase you make as a customer helps us expand our plastic collection strategy in coastal regions all over the world. Check below to see monthly updates on the amount of plastic we have collected to date.

Beach clean-up for world oceans month
Here in our hometown of San Diego, the ocean means a lot. It’s part of our everyday lives, so the negative impacts of climate change and environmentally unfriendly events are readily apparent. When you go down to the beach and see pieces of trash blowing around before your very eyes, you want to do something about it!
